Bayer Leverkusen’s head coach, Xabi Alonso, has confirmed that Super Eagles striker Victor Boniface is not affected by his failed move to Saudi Premier League giants Al Nassr in January.
The Nigerian international was poised for a lucrative €15m per season move to the Saudi club before the deal collapsed. Al Nassr shifted their focus to signing Aston Villa forward Jhon Durán in a €77m deal, including add-ons, ending their pursuit of Boniface.
Having recently recovered from a thigh injury, Boniface has returned to action, featuring in the last three matches and scoring two goals.
Speaking about Boniface’s failed move, Alonso emphasized that while the striker was open to leaving in January, he is happy to remain at Bayer Leverkusen and continue contributing to the team.
“These things happen,” Alonso told the Bundesliga website.
“We spoke before the transfer window began. He was open to the idea of a transfer, but he’s happy here. That’s why I don’t think it will be a big stress for him. He’ll shift his mindset and accept the fact that he’s staying here. He’ll view his situation positively and fight for his place in the team.”
