The National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS has condemned the assault of a lecturer at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, by a student.
The Association, in a statement on Wednesday, alaso called for an extensive investigation into the incident.
NANS Senate President, Babatunde Akinteye, has reiterated the association’s commitment to championing students’ rights while ensuring discipline, respect for authority, and adherence to institutional rules.
In a statement, Akinteye condemned the recent assault on a UNIZIK lecturer by a student, emphasizing that violence and misconduct have no place in educational institutions. He urged students to respect constituted authorities and follow institutional regulations.
He said, “NANS has always advocated for students’ rights, academic freedom, and a conducive learning environment. However, we also uphold discipline, respect for authority, and adherence to the laws governing our institutions. The assault on the UNIZIK lecturer over a TikTok video is unacceptable and embarrassing for the student body.”
Akinteye further stated that while students have the right to self-expression, including on social media, such rights must be exercised with responsibility and respect for others. He called on the management of UNIZIK to conduct a fair and thorough investigation into the incident, and if the student is found guilty, appropriate sanctions should be imposed to serve as a deterrent to others.
