South West Governors to Launch Joint Security Surveillance in Response to ISWAP Threats.

Governors in Nigeria’s Southwest have agreed to establish a joint surveillance and monitoring team to enhance security across the region in response to the growing threats from ISWAP and other criminal groups.

The decision was made in a communiqué following the Southwest Governors’ Forum meeting, held at the State House in Lagos and chaired by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu. Governors Seyi Makinde (Oyo), Lucky Aiyedatiwa (Ondo), Biodun Oyebanji (Ekiti), Dapo Abiodun (Ogun), and Ademola Adeleke (Osun) were also in attendance.

This move comes after Governor Makinde raised concerns about bandits from the North West infiltrating Oyo State. The growing insecurity has been echoed by regional leaders, including the Aare Onakakanfo of Yorubaland, Gani Adams, and the Pan-Yoruba group, Afenifere.

During the meeting, the governors condemned the security threats and called for closer collaboration between the Nigeria Police Force and local security outfits. They resolved to set up a Joint Surveillance Monitoring Team to oversee security operations and improve coordination across the region. The forum also reiterated its commitment to deploying advanced technology, including aerial surveillance, to tackle security challenges effectively.

Governor Sanwo-Olu, speaking on behalf of the governors, emphasized their resolve to counter these threats and ensure the safety of the Southwest region.
