Police sergeant Ngudumane Hamlet Mahlalela of the South African Police Service (SAPS) appeared in the Protea Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, February 20, 2025, for the alleged murder of his wife.
Mahlalela is accused of fatally shooting his wife, Jane Mashudu Mahlalela, also a SAPS member, on February 14, 2025, at their home in Protea Glen, Soweto.
Family members reportedly overheard the couple arguing about Jane not returning home the previous night, followed by the sound of a gunshot. Mahlalela allegedly fled the scene with a minor child.
He remained on the run until surrendering to the Moroka SAPS on February 18, 2025. The child was later found at an aunt’s home.
The case has been postponed to February 25, 2025, for a formal bail application hearing.
