Breaking: Senate Panel Recommends 6-Month Suspension for Natasha Akpoti

The Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Code of Conduct has recommended a six-month suspension for Senator Natasha Akpoti over alleged violations of Senate rules.

According to the committee’s chairman, Senator Neda Imasuen, the suspension is set to take effect from March 6, 2025. The recommendations include locking her office, barring her from accessing the National Assembly premises, and withdrawing her salary and that of her legislative aides during the suspension period. Additionally, she would be prohibited from representing Nigeria in any official capacity as a senator.

The committee further stated that Senator Natasha could submit a written apology for the Senate to review her suspension.

The Senate is expected to vote on the recommendation, which, if upheld, would strip her of all legislative privileges for the suspension period.

This development is the latest in an ongoing dispute between Senator Natasha and Senate President Godswill Akpabio, which initially stemmed from a seating arrangement disagreement but later escalated into allegations of sexual harassment against Akpabio.

However, on Wednesday, the same committee dismissed Senator Natasha’s petition alleging abuse of office, sexual harassment, and obstruction of legislative duties by Akpabio. Senator Imasuen described the petition as “dead on arrival,” stating that it would not be entertained by the Senate, despite being signed by her constituents.
