Manchester United have been forced to issue a statement after the club captain, Bruno Fernandes, had his X account compromised.
The Red Devils skipper’s page was hacked following their FA Cup third-round exit at the hands of Brighton. Shortly after 11 pm on Sunday, a series of unusual posts began appearing on Fernandes’ account.
The first post read: “Join Macclesfield FC. Excited for the future,” referencing the National League North side that knocked out FA Cup holders Crystal Palace on Saturday.
Another post appeared to target the club’s owners, calling for their removal: “Let’s get rid of INEOS.”
Subsequent posts tagged a range of public figures, including adult star Bonnie Blue, the England cricket team, YouTuber KSI, and world darts champion Luke Littler. One of the final posts included an image referencing United’s 7-0 loss to Liverpool in 2023.
In response, Manchester United urged fans not to interact with Fernandes’ account until further notice.
The club’s statement read:
“Bruno Fernandes’ X account has been hacked. Supporters should not engage with any of the posts or direct messages.”
