Atiku Abubakar’s Son Defects to APC, Endorses Tinubu’s 2027 Re-election

Abba Abubakar, son of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), declaring support for President Bola Tinubu’s 2027 re-election bid.

The defection was announced on Thursday in Abuja, where Abba unveiled his newly renamed political group, the Haske Bola Tinubu Organisation, formed to mobilise grassroots support for Tinubu’s second-term ambition and advance the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

Responding to the development, Atiku Abubakar described his son’s move as a personal political decision. The former vice president reaffirmed his role as a leading opposition figure, stressing his commitment to criticising APC governance while pursuing his own presidential ambition under the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

The announcement triggered widespread reactions across social media, with critics questioning the impact on opposition unity ahead of the 2027 elections, while supporters praised Atiku’s democratic approach and respect for political plurality.

The development highlights Nigeria’s evolving political dynamics, where defections, shifting party loyalties, and cross-party family affiliations remain a defining feature of the country’s democratic process.
