Family sources confirmed the death of Dr. Doyin Okupe to Channels Television on Friday, though details surrounding his demise remain unclear. Dr. Okupe hailed from Ogun State.
In a tribute, Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun expressed deep sorrow, calling the medical doctor’s passing a “personal loss.” He stated, “The news of Dr. Okupe’s death has left me with a profound sense of loss, especially following the recent passing of the Alaperu of Iperu Remo, Oba Adeleke Idowu-Basibo. His departure leaves a void that will not be easily filled.”
Governor Abiodun praised Dr. Okupe’s character, noting, “Beyond his political and professional roles, he was an affable, principled individual who played a significant role in Nigeria’s resistance to military rule. Like many democracy advocates, he endured detention and persecution, standing firm in his convictions.”
Last year, Dr. Okupe revealed his battle with cancer, which led to significant weight loss. On Channels Television’s Political Paradigm, he shared, “The chemotherapy caused loss of appetite, nausea, and weight loss over several months.” His candid reflection highlighted his resilience amid health challenges.
Governor Abiodun condoled the Okupe family, praying for strength to bear the loss. Dr. Okupe’s legacy as a committed democrat and his unwavering stance during Nigeria’s turbulent times remain indelible.
