In a landmark decision, President Bola Tinubu’s administration has officially renamed the University of Abuja in honor of former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mr. Mohammed Idris, following a Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting on Monday.
Idris explained that the decision was taken to recognize the significant contributions of General Gowon to the country. He stated, “The Federal Executive Council has decided to rename the University of Abuja in honor of elder statesman, General Yakubu Gowon. The institution will now be known as Yakubu Gowon University.”
The renaming of the university marks a significant tribute to General Gowon, who played a pivotal role in Nigeria’s history, especially during the Civil War and his tenure as Head of State from 1966 to 1975.
