FG Approves N2.5bn to Tackle Illegal Mining

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved the procurement of a N2.5 billion satellite technology system to combat illegal mining activities across Nigeria.

Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, announced the decision on Monday after the council’s third meeting of the year. He explained that the satellite system is part of an integrated solution framework aimed at addressing unlicensed, unregulated, and underreported mining operations.

“We are procuring satellite equipment and gadgets that will be installed in strategic locations nationwide,” Alake stated. “This will enable us to monitor, in real time, activities at mining sites, including the volume of minerals extracted, the number of trucks leaving the site, and the overall security situation.”

He further highlighted a two-pronged approach to tackling illegal mining: a persuasive strategy that encourages artisanal miners to form cooperatives and a coercive strategy through the recently established Mining Marshals. Over 300 cooperative societies have been formed under this initiative, helping miners access financial support while ensuring they meet their legal obligations.

For those who refuse to comply, Alake noted that enforcement measures have led to multiple arrests, prosecutions, and convictions, including those of foreign nationals engaged in illegal mining.
