Heavy Rain and Flooding Kill 13 in Malawi

At least 13 people have died in Malawi after four consecutive days of heavy rainfall triggered widespread flooding across parts of the country.

In a Thursday update, the Department of Disaster Management Affairs said it had received preliminary reports from 16 of the nation’s 36 councils. So far, 9,598 households have been affected, with thousands displaced as floodwaters continue to rise.

Emergency response teams remain active on the ground, while authorities have established 12 evacuation camps across six councils to accommodate displaced residents.

Relief materials are already being distributed to impacted communities. However, officials warn that additional support is urgently needed and are calling for both local and international financial and technical assistance as search and rescue operations continue.
