The Chairman of Ijebu Ode Local Government Area, Ogun State, Hon. Dare Alebiosun, has ordered the immediate suspension of the ongoing selection process for a new Awujale of Ijebuland.
The directive, issued to the Fusengbuwa Ruling House and the Awujale Kingmakers, follows the receipt of petitions, security reports, and complaints from concerned stakeholders, citing alleged irregularities and inducement in the process.
The decision was communicated in a letter dated January 20, 2026, addressed to the Awujale Kingmakers’ Council and signed by the Secretary to the Local Government Chairman, Hon. Oke Abiodun Adebanjo.
According to the letter, the action was taken in line with the Obas and Chiefs Law of Ogun State, 2021, which empowers the government to set aside any traditional appointment deemed contrary to the interest of peace, order, and good governance.
“Government has had due regard to the provisions of the Obas and Chiefs Law of Ogun State, 2021, which empower it to set aside an appointment where it considers such action necessary in the interest of peace, order, and good government,” the letter stated.
The local government explained that the decision was taken proactively, based on available reports, to prevent any potential breakdown of peace and to safeguard the integrity and sanctity of the Ijebu traditional institution.
Consequently, the Awujale Kingmakers have been directed to halt the selection process with immediate effect and await further directives regarding the continuation of the exercise.
The letter did not disclose specific details of the petitions or security reports that prompted the suspension.
