The Lagos State Police Command has uncovered a new trend in kidnapping, termed ‘constructive kidnapping’, where women are lured by kidnappers posing as online friends or romantic partners.
Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Olanrewaju Ishola Olawale, revealed that 16 women have already been rescued from this scheme. According to the police, kidnappers use social media to create fake friendships, offering enticing rewards such as N500,000, business-class flight tickets, and luxurious hotel stays in Lagos. Upon arrival, the victims’ phones are confiscated, money is stolen, and ransom demands are made to their families.
“This is ‘constructive kidnapping’ because the victims unknowingly walk into the trap,” CP Ishola explained. “They think they’re meeting someone romantic or business-related, but it’s all a setup.”
The police urge the public, especially women, to be cautious when interacting with strangers online and report anything suspicious.
