The Governor of Edo State, Monday Okpebholo, has appointed Nollywood actress Mercy Johnson-Okojie as the Special Adviser on Public Engagement and Advocacy.
The announcement was made on Thursday by the Secretary to the State Government, Musa Ikhilor, who stated that the appointment is aimed at strengthening communication and public engagement around government policies and initiatives.
Johnson-Okojie, a household name in Nollywood with over 200 movie credits, is also widely recognized for her philanthropic efforts. Through her foundation, she has championed causes focused on women’s empowerment, child welfare, education, and healthcare.
Her appointment is seen by many as a strategic move to leverage her wide public appeal and strong grassroots connections within the state. Her husband, a politician, represents a constituency in Edo State, further deepening her ties to the region.
Speaking on her new role, Johnson-Okojie expressed appreciation to the governor and pledged to amplify the voices of residents while supporting the administration’s SHINE Agenda.
However, the appointment has sparked mixed reactions online, with some questioning whether her celebrity status alone adequately qualifies her for the advisory position beyond public outreach functions.
