Netizens have expressed their reactions after the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) declared insults and online curses as criminal offenses. The announcement was made by the Force Public Relations Officer, Prince Olumuyiwa Adejobi, in a statement posted on his verified X handle on Friday.
Prince Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Force Public Relations Officer of the Nigeria Police Force, has clarified that directly cursing someone online is considered cyberbullying, not a form of free expression or criticism. According to him, cyberbullying, which he distinguishes from defamation, is a criminal offense and is punishable by law. “Raining direct curses on someone online is cyberbullying, not expression of freedom or criticism. And cyberbullying, which is even different from defamation, is a criminal offense and punishable. Be guided,” he stated.
This declaration has sparked reactions from netizens. One user, @General_snow, questioned, “What part of the law says that? Quote it, let’s read it.”
Another user, @trendwithola, responded skeptically, writing, “Mr Ire óoo, you are misleading the public. Kindly cite the section in the constitution to substantiate it. Na your own opinion sha.”
@Ajebodanny also chimed in, saying, “Lmao what section of the law is this? What you’re not going to do is twist the interpretation of the law so you can bully people.”
