Peter Obi, the Presidential Candidate for the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 general elections, has condemned the restrictions placed on the distribution of palliatives. Peter Obi Criticizes Restrictions on Palliative Distribution After Recent Stampedes
In the wake of multiple stampedes during palliative distributions in Anambra and the FCT that led to several deaths and injuries, Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, has expressed concern over new restrictions imposed on charity events. These tragic incidents prompted the Inspector General of Police to call for greater involvement of security agencies in organizing such events and ensuring strict adherence to crowd control and safety protocols.
While acknowledging the need for better crowd management, Obi disagreed with the directive, arguing that it could discourage Nigerians and organizations from engaging in charitable acts. In a statement issued on Monday, Obi described the restrictions as disturbing, emphasizing that, although the response was timely, it could lead to unnecessary bureaucracy.
He added, It is capable of discouraging citizens from helping the hungry and distressed among us. While I understand the need for better organization and more attention to public safety, it is important to clarify that acts of goodwill should not be hindered by excessive bureaucracy.
Obi stressed that the focus should be on promoting coordination, not imposing barriers that might prevent much-needed help from reaching those in need. He concluded, This is not the time to stifle the spirit of compassion and generosity among our people. Instead, let us channel these efforts constructively, ensuring that help reaches the most vulnerable safely and efficiently.
