Police say they stopped Papaya Ex’s white Mercedes-Benz SUV for a routine search around 1:50 a.m. on Saturday. According to authorities, she initially refused, referenced her fame, and agreed to proceed to the station, but allegedly instructed her driver to speed off, prompting interception at Addo Roundabout. During the standoff, she went live on TikTok and later shared photos showing facial swelling, claiming that an officer struck her with a gun, groped her, and assaulted her driver and sister while confiscating her phone.
Police spokesperson ACP Benjamin Hundeyin described her actions as evasive, and the Lagos State Police Command has launched an official investigation.
However, Papaya Ex and her representatives have disputed key details. They insist that:
- She did not refuse the vehicle search. People in her car were searched, and she voluntarily proceeded to the police station. Witnesses in the vehicle corroborated this.
- The driver did not speed off. He was following instructions, believing they were being directed to Langbasa Police Station. Papaya Ex’s lawyer, who joined her on a live call, said he asked the officer to clarify the station’s location but was refused, which heightened their concerns.
The Lagos Police Commissioner has ordered ongoing investigations, and her team has urged media outlets to report accurately and avoid spreading incorrect statements that could escalate tensions further.
