Real Madrid will face Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup final

The four-team format of the Spanish Super Cup meant Real Madrid had to defeat Mallorca to reach the final against Barcelona. Carlo Ancelotti took no chances, fielding what was arguably his strongest lineup, with Lucas Vázquez captaining the team.

These games are widely criticised for many reasons, and the forgetful first-half didn’t challenge that belief one bit. Lucas Vázquez had a shot saved early, but a Jude Bellingham effort was the only other real chance of the half from either side. Fans still did get some entertainment though, in the form of a battle between Pablo Maffeo and Vinícius Júnior. The two came head to head on several occasions, with Maffeo’s dive being the lowest point of the game – and Vinícius’ improved restraint being the highest.

The second half saw Real Madrid step up, taking the lead through Jude Bellingham, who managed to finish past four defenders on the line. This came after Rodrygo Goes hit the post and Kylian Mbappé missed the rebound. Chances were limited, but Madrid controlled the game at a slower pace. They struck again in added time, as a defender scored an own goal while trying to prevent an easy finish for Mbappé. Rodrygo Goes added a third from a perfect Lucas Vázquez cross. Full-time: 3-0, with Barcelona up next in the final.

Do you think Real Madrid can win the competition?
