Segun Showunmi, the convener of the National Opposition Movement Coalition (NOMC), has revealed a strategic plan for selecting Nigeria’s next president. The process, according to Showunmi, will involve building a consensus among ordinary Nigerians, with the final candidate being presented to a political party through a new movement called “The Alternative.” This initiative aims to offer Nigerians a fresh political choice in the upcoming elections.
Segun Showunmi, a former Ogun State governorship aspirant, has revealed that his new strategy aims to challenge the increasing influence of “moneybag politicians,” whom he accuses of using stolen wealth to corrupt Nigeria’s democratic process. He made these remarks during a town hall meeting in Kano State on Thursday, where the National Opposition Movement Coalition (NOMC) was officially launched in the North West.
At the event, Showunmi emphasized the need for active citizen participation in governance, stating, “What we have today are moneybag politicians who have continued to suppress democracy with their stolen wealth.” He called on Nigerians to bridge the gap between the government and the people, stressing the importance of reclaiming democracy and fostering a more inclusive political environment.
Segun Showunmi outlined a bold plan for selecting Nigeria’s next president, emphasizing the importance of people-driven choices. “The people will come together, engage in dialogue, and select a consensus candidate, who will then be presented to a political party as the people’s choice,” Showunmi explained. He stressed that the selection process must be rooted in wisdom, urging Nigerians to actively participate in shaping the country’s future.
“We must bridge the gap between the government and the governed,” Showunmi continued. “Citizens must not feel alienated or underserved. It is crucial that we ensure a quality candidate emerges from among the people in 2027.”
Showunmi also condemned the growing influence of money in Nigerian politics, accusing certain politicians of using their wealth to undermine democracy and exploit the masses. “Today’s politicians are using their money to steal democracy from us and keep us poor,” he said. He warned Nigerians about the tactics of money-driven politicians, urging them to be vigilant ahead of the 2027 elections.
“We are creating The Alternative to protect our democracy,” Showunmi added. “Politicians are attempting to turn Nigeria into a one-party state by causing division within major political parties, thereby denying us the opportunity to choose freely in the next election.”
He concluded with a strong message to Nigerians: “Stop shortchanging yourself by selling your vote. Don’t trade your future for a plate of cornmeal, Indomie, or salt. Politicians are using their money to strip democracy away from you. We are here to prevent that.”
