Tinubu’s Christmas Gift: 50% Discount on Interstate Transport Fares

In a bid to make the holiday season more affordable for Nigerians, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration unveiled a significant initiative on Thursday—a 50% reduction in interstate transport fares for the Yuletide period. This move is designed to alleviate the financial burden on travelers making their way home to celebrate Christmas and New Year with family and loved ones. By slashing fares, the Federal Government hopes to make travel more accessible, allowing Nigerians to enjoy the festive season without the added stress of high transportation costs.

Olujimi Oyetomi, the Director of Press and Public Relations at the Ministry of Transportation, shared the news in an official statement, which revealed: “To mark the start of the 2024 Yuletide season, passengers will now pay only 50% of the usual fares to their destinations, as directed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.” This initiative is set to ease the travel experience for many Nigerians during the holiday season.

This initiative is part of a broader transportation palliative aimed at providing relief to Nigerians during the festive season. The announcement came during a signing ceremony led by Senator Said Alkali, the Minister of Transportation, who was represented by Adeleye Adeoye, the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Transportation.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed between the Federal Government and key transport stakeholders, including the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), the Association of Luxury Bus Owners of Nigeria, and God is Good Motors.

Through this agreement, passengers traveling from Abuja and Lagos (Oshodi) to various destinations across the country will benefit from a 50% discount on transport fares, making travel more affordable for many during the holiday season.
