Two Dead, 12 Vehicles Burnt in Tanker Explosion on Otedola Bridge, Lagos

Two persons were killed, and three others injured in a tanker explosion on the Otedola Bridge in Lagos on Tuesday, March 11, 2025. The tanker, loaded with Premium Motor Spirit (petrol), burst into flames, forcing residents and motorists to flee for safety.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) confirmed the incident, stating that the fire destroyed 12 vehicles, eight tricycles, and one building. The injured were promptly transported to hospitals for treatment.

LASEMA’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyintolu, said the agency’s Tiger Response Team was on-site to control the situation. He urged motorists to avoid the area and use alternative routes, as the road had been cordoned off.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) also confirmed the explosion, noting that nearby structures, including a church, a residential building, and mechanics’ parks near the Otedola under-bridge, were affected. Emergency responders, including fire rescue teams, were on the ground to extinguish the blaze and manage recovery efforts.

LASTMA warned motorists against attempting to navigate through the incident zone, describing such actions as “extremely hazardous.”

The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service reported that the 30-tonne DAF gas truck, with an unknown registration number, was navigating the bridge when the accident occurred around 8:00 p.m.

The scene of the explosion has been completely blocked off, with recovery and cleanup operations ongoing.
