An unidentified woman has been confirmed dead after jumping into the Lagos Lagoon from the Third Mainland Bridge on Thursday. The Lagos State Police Command spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the incident in a statement on Friday, revealing that it occurred around 4 p.m. near the University of Lagos (UNILAG) waterfront.
According to Hundeyin, the Marine Police stationed in the area responded swiftly to the incident. The woman’s body was later recovered at the UNILAG shore slipway.
In his statement, Hundeyin said, “An unidentified lady, whose name is yet unknown, reportedly jumped from the Third Mainland Bridge into the water at the UNILAG waterfront on Thursday at about 4 p.m. She was recovered at the University of Lagos shore-slipway by a team of Marine Police attached there and was confirmed dead by a team of UNILAG medical doctors in the presence of officers from the Sabo Police Division.”
The body has been moved to the Infectious Disease Hospital Mortuary in Yaba for preservation while the police investigate the circumstances surrounding her death.
This tragic incident adds to a series of similar cases involving individuals jumping into Lagos waterways, raising concerns about mental health and the need for stronger support systems in the community.
