Activist VeryDarkMan and Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti, the youngest son of Fela Anikulapo Kuti, have paid a traditional tribute to the late icon at his gravesite in Lagos.
On Thursday, the duo visited the Kalakuta Republic Museum in Ikeja, where they carried out a Yoruba ritual that included chants and animal offerings in honor of Fela’s legacy. The moment was shared publicly and quickly gained attention across social media platforms.
The visit comes shortly after renewed controversy surrounding comments by singer Wizkid, who suggested he had surpassed Fela’s impact. VeryDarkMan had strongly criticized the claim, describing it as disrespectful to the cultural and revolutionary significance of the Afrobeat pioneer.
Reactions to the ritual tribute have been divided. Supporters applauded the gesture as a deep show of respect for Fela’s roots, ideology, and enduring influence on African music and activism. Critics, however, questioned the ritual, arguing that it portrayed Fela as a deity and labeling the act outdated and inappropriate.
The event has since fueled broader conversations online about cultural traditions, legacy, and how modern artists should engage with the icons who paved the way.
