VeryDarkMan Slams Wizkid’s Grammy as “Compensation,” Defends Fela Kuti (Video)

Nigerian influencer VeryDarkMan has dismissed Wizkid’s shared 2021 Grammy win for Best Music Video (Brown Skin Girl) as mere “compensation,” arguing that it should not be counted as a major personal achievement for the singer. According to him, only Burna Boy’s 2021 Best Global Music Album win and Tems’ 2025 Best African Music Performance award qualify as genuine Grammy victories for Nigerians.

VeryDarkMan made the remarks amid the ongoing feud sparked by Seun Kuti’s criticism of Wizkid fans for comparing the superstar to Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo Kuti. The debate intensified after Wizkid responded by saying he is “bigger than your papa,” a comment widely interpreted as a jab at Fela’s legacy.

Reacting to the controversy, VeryDarkMan argued that Nigeria lacks music legends of Fela’s stature because modern stars, including Wizkid, do not possess the musical depth, instrumental mastery, or cultural impact that defined Fela’s career. He referenced Fela’s 1976 album Zombie, which was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame, as well as the late icon’s posthumous 2026 Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, as evidence of his enduring global significance.

According to VeryDarkMan, comparing contemporary pop stars to Fela diminishes the historical and artistic weight of Afrobeat’s originator, whose influence extended far beyond commercial success.
